The main difference between an opposed engine and a traditional V-shaped engine is in the opposed (opposite) arrangement of pistons, due to which not only smooth operation of the internal combustion engine is achieved, but the general vibration level is reduced. In the opposed engine, the piston and connecting rod are located on a separate crank pin of the shaft and are equipped with an even number of working cylinders (from 2 to 12).

The last indisputable advantage is a high safety level. In possible collisions the opposed engine is displaced to the lower part of the car, deforming minimally the body and saloon, thus providing safety of the driver and front seat passengers.

Disadvantages of the opposition engine

Despite the obvious advantages, this type of engine also has disadvantages.

The most significant disadvantage is the complexity and costliness of repairing the opposition engine. As mentioned earlier, this type of internal combustion engine has a complex and non-standard design, which has significant size and weight. For important repair and preventive maintenance work, you will need to remove the engine beforehand. This will be not only time-consuming, but also very costly process for any car owner.

reducing the weight of the main moving parts – piston, crankshaft and connecting rod;

increased compression ratio by reducing the total volume of the combustion chamber and increasing the piston stroke;

application of the oil pump, which is able to increase the life of the opposition engine;

application of cooling system with separate circuits both for the block and for the cylinder head.
